Main Activities/Responsibilities:
1. Prepare, set up, and maintain laboratory equipment and materials for teaching and research activities.
2. Manufacture customised devices e.g. specialised mechanical or electro-mechanical apparatus and operate, maintain and set up the engineering workshop equipment within the laboratories without supervision. Providing technical advice and support to students and staff working within the laboratory area.
3. Ensure that laboratory spaces are safe, clean, and well-organized. Maintain laboratory inventory and order supplies and materials as needed.
4. Operate CNC and manual lathes, mills, surface grinders and drills to a high degree of accuracy, showing the ability to interpret and work to engineering drawings.
5. Responsible for the operation and maintenance of a specific laboratory/workshop environment as deemed appropriate by line manager.
6. Test and maintain equipment for experimentation and carry out experiments according to guidelines, and record results, following standard equipment procedures. Maintain accurate records of all experiments and technical procedures.
7. Oversee the work of and delegate tasks to other technicians as deemed appropriate by line manager.
8. Consult with academic staff in the preparation of work activities for research and teaching. Ensure equipment is available and functional to enable the workshop and laboratories to run successfully.
9. Ensure Health and safety regulations are adhered to and advise users accordingly. Responsible for safe operation of all workshop machinery within the bounds of university and HSE regulations. Ensure all health and safety aspects are addressed within workshop area. e.g., prepare and produce Risk Assessments, COSHH, safety training, maintaining safety records, machine maintenance and repair.

Qualification Required
Educated to a minimum of Higher National Certificate (HNC) level (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or a relevant discipline, in addition to having significant, relevant work experience in a similar role.
