Main Activities/Responsibilities:


1. Supervise teaching laboratory staff, including planning weekly work activities and co-ordinating effort within the team to ensure efficient completion of tasks.


2. Provide undergraduate teaching lab facilities, furnished with first-rate teaching lab equipment, to ensure that students receive a high-quality experience while learning and working in a lab.


3. Manage a programme of maintenance, calibration, repair, and fault finding of teaching lab equipment.


4. Advise the Head of Department on the purchase of new capital equipment for use within the undergraduate teaching laboratories and provide guidance on Continuous Professional Development (CPD) training requirements for technical staff.


5. Liaise with senior academic staff across the Department to discuss, plan and arrange the requirements for the teaching lab facilities.


6. Demonstrating teaching lab experiments and marking lab reports for the Chemical Engineering undergraduate program.


7. Maintain and provide budgetary expenditure records for Undergraduate Laboratories.


8. Provide strategic direction to teaching lab facilities ensuring that experiments are current, educational and stimulating to provide a useful teaching experience. 


9. Support development of laboratory staff through annual review and CPD activities. 


10. Ensure that all Health and Safety matters (risk assessments, COSHH regulations, SOPs and portable appliance testing) are complied with and relevant documentation completed (as the competent individual) and record results.


11. Overall responsibility for the security of the laboratories. 


12. Writing Health & Safety quizzes to support and encourage safe working in the laboratories.

Qualification Required


- Higher National Diploma (HND) or equivalent in Chemical Engineering or related discipline.


- Additional qualifications and training in lab-based skills e.g., Health & Safety, Laboratory Skills.
