A Director of Engineering in the hospitality industry directs the maintenance, operations, and safety of a hotel or resort's physical facilities. This executive role manages budgets, leads engineering staff, and ensures systems like HVAC, plumbing, and electrical run efficiently to maximize guest satisfaction. Key Responsibilities Facility & Maintenance Operations Oversee the maintenance of all mechanical, electrical, electronic, HVAC, and plumbing systems. Develop and execute robust preventive maintenance programs to minimize equipment downtime. Manage the physical upkeep of guest rooms, public spaces, and the back-of-house areas. Health, Safety, & Compliance Ensure full compliance with local government regulations, life/safety systems, and federal or state building codes. Coordinate routine inspections and maintain all building administration files, technical manuals, and drawing prints. Act as the primary point of contact for external contractors, inspecting and approving all minor building works and major installations. Financial & Strategic Management Prepare, manage, and forecast the engineering department's annual operating budget and capital expenditure plans. Implement energy-saving initiatives and sustainability programs to reduce utility costs. Advise the General Manager on facility-related problems, ongoing projects, and long-term structural needs. Leadership & Guest Experience Hire, train, and supervise engineering personnel and outsourced contractors. Respond promptly to guest complaints regarding room temperatures, plumbing issues, or general facility defects to maintain high hospitality standards. Coordinate closely with other executive committee members (e.g., Rooms, Food & Beverage) to prevent operational disruptions.
Qualifications & Requirements Education: Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil Engineering, or a related technical discipline. Experience: Minimum of 10 to 15 years of industry experience, with at least 3-5 years in a senior engineering leadership role within a hotel or resort environment. Technical Skills: Extensive working knowledge of Building Management Systems (BMS), energy management, refrigeration, and fire life safety systems. Soft Skills: Exceptional communication, vendor negotiation, problem-solving, and crisis management skills. Job Location: Juba, South Sudan
